The Day Bobby Disappeared

I remember the day little brother Bobby disappeared
We had been outside playing but now we all feared

It started like any other day
about five of us kids had gone out to play

hide and seek was our favorite game
we had certain rules they were always the same

you could hide anywhere but you couldn’t leave the yard
the yard was big so it made it rather hard

it took a long time to find everyone
sometimes it took hours for us to get done

once you were hidden you couldn’t move
if you got caught you automatically would lose

this day the game started like every other
we found everyone except our baby brother

Bobby was three and always the first to be found
but after about an hour he was nowhere around

We finally went into the house and told our mother
we found everyone except baby brother

she sent us all out to Look high and low
we looked in the usual place he would go

Bobby always went to the same place to hide from us
He was easy to find he always hid behind a bush

after about three hours mother was getting anxious
We’re searching this hillside no matter how long it takes us

We all yelled and screamed Bobby’s name all up and down our hillside
Aunt’s and uncles and the county sheriff joined our side

it was as if Bobby had disappeared into thin air
I don’t remember ever seen my mom so scared

and then we heard it a bloodcurdling scream that could be felt in your soul
it was coming from underneath the feed sack out in the yard covering a hole

little Bobby had crawled into a hole in the yard
He got real comfortable and curled into a ball

he pulled the feed sack over him to hide his feet
But after a few moments he had fallen fast asleep

Bobby had been sleeping like a baby for four hours in that hole
none of us knew he was right by us sleeping like a mole

my mother slumped in a heap in the front porch chair and cried
relieved that her little Bobby had not wandered off and died

mama grabbed up little Bobby and looked at him and sighed
you scared the life right out of-me she hugged him tight and took him inside

That’s exactly how I remember that horrible day
When Bobby disappeared when we all went out to play
