Wagons West

  • January 25, 2021

you thought you were on the sea
In the old West across the long Prairie

On the horizon, wagons as far as the eyes could see

Canvas topped horse-drawn wagons.
Pioneers heading across the Prairie to the West

Untamed plains and the western states
traveling with extraordinarily little rest

Hopes and dreams piled into a wagon loaded down to capacity.

from the Louisiana Purchase to the California gold rush and the homestead act rushing for a better life, they were longing to see

We have an image in our heads of early pioneers settling to sleep each night,

safely tucked into beds inside their covered wagon, children tucked in tight

The wagons were too small, measuring only about four feet wide and eight or nine feet long.

That means the entire wagon was narrower than a full-size bed and only a little longer, if I am not wrong.

All the family’s belongings had to be packed into the wagon, leaving no room for beds or frills.

Most families camped under the open stars or slept on the ground beneath the wagon by the wheels.

Wagons West each morning, you would hear Mr. Pioneer Spirit say

It is going to be a cloud of long bumpy dust driven days.

Wagons West were the Pioneers’ contribution to many stories today.
