In my grandads garden, it was well arranged

Rows here and there and post where grapes hanged

I would visit the garden almost every day

I knew grandad didn’t care if I wouldn’t get in his way

When the grapes were about ready, was my favorite time

Big clusters of green grapes hanging and strung out on the line

I was always anxious to be the first to get a taste

I would get up early and down the hill, I would race

Grandad would lean over and Whisper low in my ear

Very soft, and yet loud enough for me to hear

Molly Bee don’t eat those grapes, bright green on the vine,

They’ll give you a tummy ache every time

Wait till you see the purple hue

then you’ll know they’re good to chew

The Grapes won’t continue ripening once there picked

Test a few to see if they are to your liking that’s the trick

usually in late summer or early fall Grapes are ripe and ready

when they are rich in color, full-flavored, easily crushed, and juicy

If you notice bird activity, you’ve just received an alert from the grapes on the vine

Soon the animals like raccoons and rabbits will all be in-line

That’s when you can gather some of the heavy clusters

Take them up to mama while they still have their luster

She’ll make you up some grape jelly

Maybe she’ll fill up that skinny little belly

Oh, I remember mamas grape jelly well enough

But picking grapes with grandad was the best stuff
