The Cattle Drover

  • October 15, 2020

The roundups over and the cattle drives done
Now tired little doggies just soaking up the sun

From Texas to Kansas looking for railheads along the way
Never any rooms to rent in bedrolls is where they stayed

Shipments to stockyards, Louisiana, and points east
The cattle would set many tables with a big beef feast

Cowboy hat, boots, lots of leather, and chaps
They knew the trails by heart no need for any maps

Pistols, rifle, lariats, and spurs
Was A cowboys armor for sure

It took courage, devotion, and a sense of duty to drive cattle
When someone tried to steal the herd it ended in a battle

Through quicksand and lightning and many flooding rivers
Sometimes cold blizzards, during the nights you just shivered

The cowboy ate summer sand and was burned by the sun
The long journey on the cattle drive wasn’t much fun

The cattle drives are long gone, freight trains took over
The cowboy had to hang his hat it’s over for the cattle drover
