Let’s pull some taffy on a Saturday night
Daddy had the recipe and he cooked it just right
In our house, daddy always made the candy
Mom said it was because he was very handy
He made popcorn balls, peanut brittle, and taffy the best
Everything else that was cooked for my mom it was left
The taffy pull was the funniest way for us
To learn to make candy and not kick up a fuss
We watched as daddy put everything into a great big pot
He would stir it with a wooden spoon until it got real hot
Then he would put it into buttered pans
As it cooled we stood in a line while he buttered up our hands
We giggled and we wriggled as we stood in anticipation
For that-sticky gooey taffy, we waited with elation
When it was cool enough daddy would give us each
Enough of the taffy to pull and shape a piece
We pulled and pulled until it was as clear as glass
Then we’d twist it up real quick before it hardened fast
We spent hours making and pulling candy
We sure loved that our daddy was handy
In our home on a Saturday night
Taffy pulling was a beautiful sight
