I loved blackberry picking in the morning right before it got sunny
Because it wasn’t only fun but yielded cobblers that we’re yummy
A ripe blackberry is a deep black if it is plump and full
It will pull free from the plant with only a slight pull
If the berry is red or purple, it’s not ripe yet so go away
It’s best to leave alone for a few more days
Blackberry picking was our favorite time on a summer July day
Mom would say run get dressed and grab your buckets be serious and don’t play
Blackberries generally are ready for their first pick between July and August
Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants is an absolute must
Because there are chiggers, and snake and ticks That like berry picking too
If your not all covered from head to toe, they’ll be there picking you
We picked real careful so none were wasted
That didn’t mean a lot had not been tasted
We would each fill our buckets until full to the top
We all had to do this, then we could stop
We returned home from blackberry picking but we never would race
We would give them to mama and get a smile when she saw our purple hands and face
It’s the simple things that make life a pleasure
BlackBerry picking always yielded a beautiful treasure
Thanks Debbie
