My granddad told me stories about
Way back when
Of when to let things go and when
I should defend
He taught me things about the
planting of a field
The way the garden grows and how
it gives its yield
The names of all the plants and varieties of
colorful flowers
I still recall when ugly Feelings come up in my
darkest hours
I picture his big calloused hands when he
plants seeds in a row
by his side each day together,
we watch them as they grow
Come next June, as we watch them, how they
bloom and sway
I turn my face towards the sun, and through smiling eyes, I watch grandad’s way
My grandad left and went away in the summer of
nineteen sixty-four
My grandad’s face would not return to our
garden gate anymore
It broke my heart. Shattering my core, I didn’t understand, Grandad
Thinking of you, I was missing my very best friend
I ever had
I’ll wait to see your smiling sky blue eyes
to shine again someday
I’m sad, and so I run to you in my mind and catch
a glimpse of you today
Come some sunny day in the month of June
we’ll meet again
On a fragrant wildflower hillside by
the grassy glen
I will see you then, my sweet grandad
A big man in a small girl’s world
THE BEST FRIEND A SMALL GIRL EVER HAD
