One summer daddy loaded us all up
in the back of his pickup truck
He took us to the river to have a summer picnic all together
It wasn’t very often he could spare the time, he had to work when there was good weather
Mom had picked up some hot dogs and a loaf of bread
I’ll build a fire to roast them on daddy had said
He had made a stop at Burgess’s grocery store
We were all curious and anxious to see what for
So when he came back out of the grocery store door
We were Anxious to see if we might get something more
He was carrying a case of assorted soda pop to our total surprise
We squealed in delight because we couldn’t believe our eyes
In Our poor little world, we only had our cheep kool-aid
We couldn’t afford a soda pop we drank what mama made
Daddy set them in the back of the truck with us
You’ll only get one and that’s if you don’t fuss
Be thinking about which flavor you want to drink
As he headed towards the front he gave us a wink
It brings tears to my eyes when I think of it now
It was such a big deal and I don’t know-how
He even afforded to treat us to that case of pop that day
But I can picture myself on the cement park bench and the memory stays
I drank my grape Nehi, as slow as I could
My first taste of soda pop sure was good
Mine was Love soda. Pink in color. Sitting in front of Ferguson’s store with a Babe Ruth candy bar.
