I went to work with my daddy one day
I thought I was going to get to play
but it sure didn’t turn out that way
He put a small hammer in my little hand
handed me a junction box that looked like a square tin can
and he said to hit it right here and pull it out right there
you can have all the plugs you knock out of the square
so I grabbed the hammer and went right to work
it was getting so dusty in there I thought I would choke
the boxes would end up on the side of the two by fours
I watched him for a moment and moved along to do more
he said go ahead and do five more if you are able
I’m almost ready to run the cable
Always pull it back when you run it leave a little slack
you never know things change; you might have to retract
Now he pulls stuff out of a bag and says these are the clamps
what’s next I-hated to ask my hand already was giving-me cramps
He just looked down with his smiling blues eyes
I think he knew I was getting ready to cry
So He pulled over his big 5-gallon water can
I think you deserve this; you’ve worked like a man
My dad was a carpenter; he knew his trade
On this day, my lessons were made
Years later I worked in a furniture place
Using hammers and saws and going home dusty faced
My Dady was a carpenter that was his occupation
The day he took me to his job gave my life direction
