My mom would often make the statement wait and see

She would never make a promise that she might not be able to keep

She was a woman of her word, but circumstances could change

So instead of making a promise, the words wait and see, didn’t seem strange

Wait and see brought happy times, of which I was very fond

Like a picnic on a quilt on the grass by Shortenings pond

Or a spur of the minute trip to Jims Grocery store where a Nichol was doled out

We spent it on penny candy mama smiled even though she lost out

Money wasn’t easy to come by she probably needed it for something else

Her wait and see made us happy, mama never thought about herself

Promises are easily made, and as easily broken

Mamas “wait and see” for us was not merely token

Such comforting memories take me back to a place I like to be

I long for that day when mama returns now I’ll wait and see
