The Purple Popsicle

Joyce Robyn Orcutt

It happened one day in Burgess General store
About five minutes after we went in the door

the temperature had risen and it was a scorcher outside
when we went in, it wasn’t much cooler inside

Robin spotted the Popsicles through the icebox glass
she couldn’t resist and snuck one out fast

She tucked it in her waistband but it slipped into her pants
She tried not to wiggle but she did a little dance

She didn’t know it but old Jim saw what she had done
so he decided to teach her a lesson and have a little fun

A valuable lesson could be taught here today
so he looked at us and slowly begin to say

how is your family? your mom and your dad
my what a brutal hot spell we have had

we started walking towards the front door
but he kept talking, then we saw it on the floor

purple melted popsicle had run down Robin’s leg
A sick feeling came over me and I silently begged

But the evidence of her actions was easy to see
he acted like he didn’t notice and he just let it be

The popsicle had all melted by the time he was through
it made a big mess of sticky purple filling up her shoe

I know old Jim could see it but he didn’t even acknowledge
he just smiled and walked off and left sister Robin bawling

the lesson was learned and it was a hard one to endure
Never sneak a purple popsicle out it’s going to melt for sure
