Our Daddy went out to buy milk one day
Never to return, he left and went away

Those were the words uttered by a young girl
That’s all she remembered about her broken world

The boy had asked the question why do you roam
the street
I have to beg for money to help our family eat

My mother works two jobs and barely gets
to sleep
We walk around softly, quietly we creep

I have determined I will never be like my mother
I won’t ever love or depend upon another

The images I conjured in my head of what
her life might be

It made a lump come up in my throat emotions
churning inside me

I have a love of a mother, and my dad
That should make me happy; why does it
make me sad

I thought of all the milkless children with
no mom or dad

Because Daddy went out for milk one day,
It changed my world. Now life’s tough, but
I will be Okay
The little boy hugged her, then sadly walked
away
