Big Rock

In the background of a lot of our old pictures

Was this huge rock, it was a permanent fixture

It brought childhood memories for my mind to see

My brothers and sisters playing with me

The big rock across our road was our playground

If we weren’t in the house the rock is where we could be found

It beckoned us to come to play and we made-up silly games

King of the boulder, where we each took our ten minutes of fame

Sometimes we got cuts and bruises aplenty

Maybe we cried for a minute or two if any

When you grew up in the country you played with what you found

Under an old bridge, the creek bank, or the big rock on the ground

It was the voices of laughter and childhood squills that filled the air

We used what the hills gave and we played everywhere

Most children will never experience what we did

Times have changed since I was a kid
