The Mailbox

AN OLD MAILBOX

I went back in time today
Far from city streets, I strayed

To a place and time long ago
Where life held a soft sweet glow

Burnishing on the countryside hills
Lush green trees in wide fields

After all these years a rusty old mailbox is still standing
An empty place in my heart became filled, and demanding

For just that brief moment as I silently caught the glimpse
Took me back to the quiet, peaceful years now all spent

A longing hung in the air, for the rest of my day
For the letters of life, no more are sent my way

Just a rusty old mailbox, standing faithfully at her post
It was her history that got to me the most
